OBJECTIVE: To investigate the blood cadmium concentrations and the related change in Chinese urban children derived from the China Nutrition and Health Survey 2002 and 2012(CNHS 2002 and CNHS 2012). METHODS: The Chinese urban children aged 6-11 years were selected according to gender, age and regional distribution using the multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method, as well as the corresponding whole blood samples. The blood cadmium concentration was carefully determined by the quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) and the percentage of blood cadmium over 2 µg/L was subsequently estimated. In addition, the upper limit values of the 95%CI of the 95th percentiles of available blood cadmium data was assessed as the threshold of cadmium exposure. RESULTS: Totally, 2182 Chinese urban children were included, and of these, 1036 children were from the CNHS 2002 and 1146 children were from the CNHS 2012. From the CNHS 2002 to the CNHS 2012, the median blood cadmium concentration was increased from 0.28 µg/L to 0.95 µg/L, and the percentage of blood cadmium with over 2 µg/L was elevated from 1.45% to 10.47%. In addition, the new estimated threshold of blood cadmium was ascended from 1.24 µg/L up to 2.89 µg/L. CONCLUSION: The risk of cadmium exposure in Chinese urban children aged 6-11 years was increasingly aggravated from the CHNS 2002 to the CNHS 2012.

The escalating expansion of urban subway systems in recent years has accentuated the issue of stray current corrosion within pipeline networks, emerging as a critical concern for urban safety. This paper delves into the intricate interplay between these phenomena, employing data-driven statistical analyses to elucidate the coupling characteristics between subway lines and the occurrence of failures in adjacent buried pipelines. An advanced three-dimensional finite element model was developed for stray current corrosion in pipelines, seamlessly integrating empirical data and physics-based modeling, which is to uncover the spatial nuances and multifaceted impacts on subway pipeline corrosion from both macro and micro perspectives under varying influencing factors. The study unveils a pronounced geographical and functional affinity between urban subway networks and metallic pipeline networks. The coupling attributes between subway systems and pipelines, such as distance, angle, and pipeline-specific characteristics including material and age, assume pivotal roles. The results further emphasize the hierarchical order of influence, with stray current intensity holding the greatest sway, followed by the distance between subway and pipelines, the angle between them, and soil resistivity. This paper offers a comprehensive investigation of the interrelationships and influential factors between subway systems and adjacent pipelines. It contributes to the mitigation and management of stray current corrosion in pipelines induced by nearby rail transit, thereby enhancing the resilience of both subway and pipeline networks within urban areas.

RESUMO

Multiple sclerosis (MS) was defined as a rare disease in China due to its low prevalence. For a long time, interferon ß was the only approved disease-modifying therapy (DMT). Since the first oral DMT was approved in 2018, DMT approval accelerated, and seven DMTs were approved within 5 years. With an increasing number of DMTs being prescribed in clinical practice, it is necessary to discuss the standardized MS treatment algorithms depending on the disease activity and DMT availability. In this review paper, more than 20 Chinese experts in MS have reviewed the therapeutic progress of MS in China and worldwide and discussed algorithms for treating relapsing MS (RMS) based on the available DMTs in China, providing insights for establishing the standardized RMS treatment algorithms in this country.


Treatment algorithms of relapsing multiple sclerosis in China In this review paper, more than 20 Chinese experts in MS have reviewed the therapeutic progress of MS in China and worldwide and discussed algorithms for treating relapsing MS (RMS) based on the available DMTs in China, providing insights for establishing the standardized RMS treatment algorithms in this country: 1) CIS and RRMS account for more than 90% of the MS patients and most of them are mild to moderate; 2) MS patients should initiate DMT treatments as soon as the disease has been diagnosed in order to reduce the risk of disease progression; 3) Patients who have been diagnosed with MS should start treatment with fundamental DMTs unless the disease course has been highly active; 4) MAGNIMS score may be a suitable and simplified assessment tool for measuring treatment response to DMTs; 5) Patients treated with corticosteroids and NSIS should be switched to the standardized DMT treatment during remission in accordance with disease activity.

A specific matrix sensor that can operate at low temperatures and has a high sensing response is crucial for monitoring flammable VOC gases. In this study, a nanostructured SnO2 thin film was successfully produced using a suitable chemical deposition method, and its sensing properties were comprehensively analyzed. The SEM images revealed that the thin film of the nanostructured SnO2 is made up of two different sizes of broccoli-like structure nanoparticles. The sensor, which is based on this unique micronano structure, demonstrated a high sensing response (44), low operating temperature (200 °C), and fast response time (6s). Additionally, the nanostructured sensor exhibited excellent resistance to humidity interference and long-term stability. Moreover, DFT is employed to evaluate the electronic properties and to systematically explain the gas sensing mechanism of the nanostructured sensor based on the SnO2 thin film.

Background: Nasal sprays are widely used in treating nasal and sinus diseases; however, there are very few studies on the drug delivery efficiency of nasal sprays. In this study, the drug delivery efficiency of three different nasal spray devices was evaluated in vitro using a 3D printed cast model of nasal cavity. Methods: Three nasal spray devices with different nozzles and angles of administration were used in the 3D model of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. The spraying area (SA), maximal spraying distance (MSD), and spraying distribution scores on the nasal septum and lateral nasal wall were recorded. Results: Different nasal spray devices have their own characteristics, including volume of each spray, SA, and plume angle. The SA of the three nozzles on the nasal septum increased with an increasing angle of administration. When the angle of administration was 50°, each nozzle reached the maximal SA. There was no statistically significant difference in MSD among the three nozzles at the three angles. The total scores for each nozzle using the three different spraying angles were as follows: nozzle A, 40° > 30° > 50°; nozzle B, 30° > 40° > 50°; and nozzle C, 30° > 40° > 50°. The total scores for different nozzles using the same angle were statistically significantly different and the scores for nozzle C were the highest. Nozzle C had the minimum plume angle. None of the three nozzles could effectively delivered drugs into the middle meatus at any angle in this model. Conclusions: The design of the nozzle affects drug delivery efficiency of nasal spray devices. The ideal angle of administration is 50°. The nozzle with smaller plume angle has higher drug delivery efficiency. Current nasal spray devices can easily deliver drugs to most areas of the nasal cavity, such as the turbinate, nasal septum, olfactory fissure, and nasopharynx, but not the middle meatus. These findings are meaningful for nozzle selection and device improvements.

Extracting data insights and generating visual data stories from tabular data are critical parts of data analysis. However, most existing studies primarily focus on tabular data stored as flat tables, typically without leveraging the relations between cells in the headers of hierarchical tables. When properly used, rich table headers can enable the extraction of many additional data stories. To assist analysts in visual data storytelling, an approach is needed to organize these data insights efficiently. In this work, we propose CoInsight, a system to facilitate visual storytelling for hierarchical tables by connecting insights. CoInsight extracts data insights from hierarchical tables and builds insight relations according to the structure of table headers. It further visualizes related data insights using a nested graph with edge bundling. We evaluate the CoInsight system through a usage scenario and a user experiment. The results demonstrate the utility and usability of CoInsight for converting data insights in hierarchical tables into visual data stories.

Five undescribed eremophilane-type sesquiterpenes, remophilanetriols E-I (1-5), along with seven known compounds (6-12) were isolated from the fresh roots of Rehmannia glutinosa. Their structures were characterized by extensive spectroscopic data analysis and their absolute configurations were determined by comparing their calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra and experimental ECD spectra. The anti-pulmonary fibrosis activities of all compounds were evaluated in vitro by MTT methods, and compounds 2, 8, 10, and 12 exhibited excellent anti-pulmonary fibrosis activities. In addition, compound 2 can reduce the levels of ROS and apoptosis in TGF-ß1-induced BEAS-2B cells.

PURPOSE: The available evidence regarding the role of fruit and vegetable consumption in the development of colorectal polyps remains inconclusive, and there is a lack of data on different histopathologic features of polyps. We aimed to evaluate the associations of fruit and vegetable consumption with the prevalence of colorectal polyps and its subtypes in a high-risk population in China. METHODS: We included 6783 Chinese participants aged 40-80 years who were at high risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) in the Lanxi Pre-colorectal Cancer Cohort (LP3C). Dietary information was obtained through a validated food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and colonoscopy screening was used to detect colorectal polyps. Dose-response associations of fruit and vegetable intake with the prevalence of polyps were calculated using multivariate-adjusted regression models, which was reported as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: 2064 cases of colorectal polyps were ascertained in the LP3C during 2018-2019. Upon multivariable adjustments, including the diet quality, fruit consumption was inversely associated with the prevalence of polyps (P trend = 0.02). Participants in the highest tertile of fruit intake had a 25% lower risk (OR: 0.75; 95% CI 0.62‒0.92) compared to non-consumers, while vegetable consumption had no significant association with polyp prevalence (P trend = 0.86). In terms of colorectal histopathology and multiplicity, higher fruit intake was correlated with 24, 23, and 33% lower prevalence of small polyps (OR: 0.76; 95% CI 0.62‒0.94; P trend = 0.05), single polyp (OR: 0.77; 95% CI 0.62‒0.96; P trend = 0.04), and distal colon polyps (OR: 0.67; 95% CI 0.51‒0.87; P trend = 0.003), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Fresh fruit is suggested as a protective factor to prevent colorectal polyps in individuals at high risk of CRC, and should be underscored in dietary recommendations, particularly for high-risk populations.

The incorporation of randomness into stochastic computing can provide ample opportunities for applications such as simulated annealing, non-polynomial hard problem solving, and Bayesian neuron networks. In these cases, a considerable number of random numbers with an accurate and configurable probability distribution function (PDF) are indispensable. Preferably, these random numbers are provided at the hardware level to improve speed, efficiency, and parallelism. In this paper, how spin-orbit torque magnetic tunnel junctions (SOT-MTJs) with high barriers are suitable candidates for the desired true random number generators is demonstrated. Not only do these SOT-MTJs perform excellently in speed and endurance, but their randomness can also be conveniently and precisely controlled by a writing voltage, which makes them a well-performed Bernoulli bit. By utilizing these SOT-MTJ-based Bernoulli bits, any PDF, including Gaussian, uniform, exponential, Chi-square, and even arbitrarily defined distributions can be realized. These PDF-configurable true random number generators can then promise to advance the development of stochastic computing and broaden the applications of the SOT-MTJs.

Stem-end rot (SER) causes brown necrotic lesions in the pulp near the base of the fruit pedicel and is one of the most devastating postharvest diseases of avocados in all avocado growing regions of the world. China's avocado industry is growing very rapidly, and the planting area is expanding, but little is known about the pathogens and genetic diversity of avocado SER. To determine the causal agents of SER, avocado fruits were sampled from the main avocado-producing areas in China during 2020 and 2021. Fungal isolates were obtained from SER symptomatic avocado fruits and identified by morphology combined with phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS), translation elongation factor 1-α (EF1-α) and ß-tubulin (TUB2) gene sequences. All 101 isolates belonged to Lasiodiplodia spp., and four Lasiodiplodia species were identified, namely L. pseudotheobromae (59.41%), L. theobromae (24.75%), L. mahajangana (7.92%), L. euphorbiaceicola (1.98%), and six others are classified as Lasiodiplodia sp. (5.94%). There were only slight morphological differences in colonies and conidia of these four species of Lasiodiplodia. The pathogenicity tests showed symptoms of SER, and the 92.08% of the isolates exhibited a high level of virulence on avocado (disease index > 70), related to the disease severity on avocado fruit. All tested isolates grew well under conditions from 23 to 33℃. There was a significant difference in mycelial growth between the four species of Lasiodiplodia after treatment with high temperature or low temperature. L. pseudotheobromae growth was the fastest at 13 to 18℃, but was the lowest at 38℃ (P < 0.05). Red pigment could be produced by all tested isolates after culturing for 7 days at 38℃. The mycelial growth rate was the fastest on PDA medium, and the slowest on OMA medium but promoted spore formation (P < 0.05). In addition, was determined the genetic diversity of Lasiodiplodia pathogenic species associated with SER collected from avocado, mango, guava and soursop fruits was determined. A total of 74 isolates were clustered into 4 main ISSR groups by unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) analysis, and the classification of this group was related to the host. Extensive diversity was detected in the Lasiodiplodia populations. The diverse geographical origins and host species significantly influenced the population differentiation, and most of the genetic variation occurred within populations (P < 0.001). This is the first study to identify the major pathogens of avocado SER in China and to survey their occurrence, pathogenicity and include a comparative analysis of genetic diversity with Lasiodiplodia spp. causing SER on other fruit hosts. Collectively, the Lasiodiplodia species complex affecting avocado showed high pathogenicity and diversity, while L. pseudotheobromae was the most frequently isolated species in China. The results of this study provide insights into the aspects of epidemic of SER disease caused by Lasiodiplodia species, which will help in developing strategies for the management and control of stem end-rot in avocado.

Background: The public health burden of cardiomyopathies and competency in their management by health agencies in China are not well understood. Methods: This study adopted a multi-stage sampling method for hospital selection. In the first stage, nationwide tertiary hospital recruitment was performed. As a result, 88 hospitals with the consent of the director of cardiology and access to an established electronic medical records system, were recruited. In the second stage, we sampled 66 hospitals within each geographic-economic stratification through a random sampling process. Data on (1) the outpatient and inpatient visits for cardiomyopathies between 2017 and 2021 and (2) the competency in the management of patients with cardiomyopathies, were collected. The competency of a hospital to provide cardiomyopathy care was evaluated using a specifically devised scale. Findings: The outpatient and inpatient visits for cardiomyopathies increased between 2017 and 2021 by 38.6% and 33.0%, respectively. Most hospitals had basic facilities for cardiomyopathy assessment. However, access to more complex procedures was limited, and the integrated management pathway needs improvement. Only 4 (6.1%) of the 66 participating hospitals met the criteria for being designated as a comprehensive cardiomyopathy center, and only 29 (43.9%) could be classified as a primary cardiomyopathy center. There were significant variations in competency between hospitals with different administrative and economic levels. Interpretation: The health burden of cardiomyopathies has increased significantly between 2017 and 2021 in China. Although most tertiary hospitals in China can offer basic cardiomyopathy care, more advanced facilities are not yet universally available. Moreover, inconsistencies in the management of cardiomyopathies across hospitals due to differing administrative and economic levels warrants a review of the nation allocation of medical resources. Two unprecedented quinone compounds Rubiaxylm A (1) and Rubiaxylm B (2), along with fifteen known anthraquinones (3-17) were isolated and characterized from the roots of Rubia tibetica in Tibetan medicine. Their structures were identified through comprehensive analyses of 1D/2D NMR as well as HR-ESIMS data. Furthermore, all separated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity on A549, Caco-2, MDA-MB-231 and Skov-3 cell lines. In particular, compound 2 effectively inhibited MDA-MB-231 cells with an IC50 value of 8.15 ± 0.20 µM. Subsequently, the anti-tumor mechanism of 2 was investigated by flow cytometry, JC-1 staining, cell scratching and cell colony. These results indicated that compound 2 could inhibit the proliferation of MDA-MB-231 cells by arresting cells in the G1 phase.

In insects, the expression of 20E response genes that initiate metamorphosis is triggered by a pulse of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E). The 20E pulse is generated through two processes: synthesis, which increases its level, and inactivation, which decreases its titer. CYP18A1 functions as an ecdysteroid 26-hydroxylase and plays a role in 20E removal in several representative insects. However, applying 20E degradation activity of CYP18A1 to other insects remains a significant challenge. In this study, we discovered high levels of Hvcyp18a1 during the larval and late pupal stages, particularly in the larval epidermis and fat body of Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata, a damaging Coleopteran pest of potatoes. RNA interference (RNAi) targeting Hvcyp18a1 disrupted the pupation. Approximately 75% of the Hvcyp18a1 RNAi larvae experienced developmental arrest and remained as stunted prepupae. Subsequently, they gradually turned black and eventually died. Among the Hvcyp18a1-depleted animals that successfully pupated, around half became malformed pupae with swollen elytra and hindwings. The emerged adults from these deformed pupae appeared misshapen, with shriveled elytra and hindwings, and were wrapped in the pupal exuviae. Furthermore, RNAi of Hvcyp18a1 increased the expression of a 20E receptor gene (HvEcR) and four 20E response transcripts (HvE75, HvHR3, HvBrC, and HvαFTZ-F1), while decreased the transcription of HvßFTZ-F1. Our findings confirm the vital role of CYP18A1 in the pupation, potentially involved in the degradation of 20E in H. vigintioctopunctata.

The low incidence of combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA) is an important factor limiting research progression. Our study extensively included nearly three decades of relevant literature and assembled the most comprehensive database comprising 5,742 patients with cHCC-CCA. We summarized the characteristics, tumor markers, and clinical features of these patients. Additionally, we present the evolution of cHCC-CCA classification and explain the underlying rationale for these classification standards. We reviewed cHCC-CCA diagnostic advances using imaging features, tumor markers, and postoperative pathology, as well as treatment options such as surgical, adjuvant, and immune-targeted therapies. In addition, recent advances in more effective chemotherapeutic regimens and immune-targeted therapies were explored. Furthermore, we described the molecular mutation features and potential specific markers of cHCC-CCA. The prognostic value of Nestin has been proven, and we speculate that Nestin will also play a role in classification and diagnosis. However, further research is needed. Moreover, we believe that the possibility of using machine learning liquid biopsy for preoperative diagnosis and establishing a scoring system are directions for future research.

Objectives: Investigating the impact of cadmium (Cd) on annulus fibrosus (AF) cells and its potential mechanism was the purpose of the current study. Materials and Methods: Cd was cultivated in different concentrations (0, 1, 5, 10, and 20 µM) on AF cells and the potential effects of the metal were assessed. Using the CCK-8 method, cell viability and proliferation were identified. Using transcriptome analysis, the annulus fibrosus cells were sequenced both with and without cadmium chloride. The EdU method was used to determine the rate of cell proliferation; senescence-associated ß-galactosidase (SA-ß-Gal) staining was used to determine the number of positive cells; and western blot, RT-PCR, and immunofluorescence were used to determine the protein and mRNA expression of senescence-associated proteins (p16, p21, and p53) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). Results: According to the findings, Cd has the ability to increase the production of senescence-associated genes (p16 and p21) and senescence-associated secreted phenotype (SASP), which includes IL-1ß and IL-6. Through the JNK/p53 signal pathway, Cd exposure simultaneously accelerated AF cell senescence and promoted SASP. Following JNK inhibitor (SP600125) treatment, the expression of p53, JNK, and senescence-associated indices were all down-regulated. Conclusion: By activating the JNK/p53 signaling pathway, Cd can induce oxidative stress damage and AF cell senescence. These findings could provide a new approach for treating and preventing intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) caused by Cd exposure.

The objective of this study was to explore the effects of different amounts of biochar on the migration process and characteristics of NO3--N in loessial soil. In this study, six groups of mixed soil samples with biochar and loessial soil mass ratios of 0% (T0), 1% (T1), 2% (T2), 3% (T3), 4% (T4), and 5% (T5) were used as research objects. NO3--N was used as the tracer. Through the indoor soil column solute transport simulation tests, the effects of different biochar application amounts on the NO3--N transport process in loessial soil were simulated and studied. The results showed that the breakthrough curve of NO3--N in loessial soil shifted to the right with the increasing of biochar application, and the peak value gradually decreased. The initial penetration time, complete penetration time, and total penetration time increased with the increasing of biochar application amount. The total penetration time of NO3- in the T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 treatments was 1.26, 2.31, 2.72, 3.22, and 3.57 times that of T0, respectively. The R2 was > 0.997 and RMSE was < 2.083 of the two-zone model (TRM). Compared with the convection-dispersion equation (CDE), the TRM model had higher fitting accuracy and could better simulate the NO3--N migration process in loessial soil after the application of different contents of biochar. The analysis of the fitting parameters of the TRM model showed that the average pore velocity, hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient, and water content ratio in the movable zone gradually decreased with the increasing of biochar application, whereas the dispersion and mass exchange coefficient showed an increasing trend. The results showed that biochar application could effectively enhance the ability of loessial soil to fix NO3--N, reduce the leakage of NO3--N to groundwater, and play an important role in maintaining soil fertility and preventing groundwater pollution.

The influence of oat lipids on the structural, thermal, rheological, and in vitro digestibility properties of oat starch under heat processing conditions was investigated. X-ray diffraction, fourier infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry revealed the formation of a V-shaped crystal structure between starch and lipid, resulting in enhanced orderliness and enthalpy. Oat lipids decreased the final viscosity and gel strength of oat starch while weakening the trend towards gel network formation. Additionally, oat lipids exhibited enhanced resistance to starch hydrolase, leading to elevated contents of slowly digestible starch and resistant starch. Consequently, this leads to an augmentation in the rate constants for the rapid digestion fraction (k1) and the slow digestion fraction (k2). When the lipid content reached 7.50 %, a significant increase of 42.20 % was observed in the maximum digestibility of slow digestion fraction (C∞2), while a notable decrease of 44.06 % was noted in the maximum digestibility of rapid digestion fraction (C∞1). The correlation analysis revealed that lipid content, final viscosity, and enthalpy exerted significant influences on in vitro starch digestion. These results demonstrate the substantial impact of lipid content on oat starch structure, subsequently affecting its thermal, rheological, and digestive properties.

The photochemistry of noncovalent interactions to promote organic transformations is an emerging approach to providing fresh opportunities in synthetic chemistry. Generally, the external substance is necessary to add as an interaction partner, thereby sacrificing the atom economy of the reaction. Herein, we describe a catalyst-free and noncovalent interaction-mediated strategy to access the olefination of N-tosylhydrazones using acetone as a solvent and an interaction partner. This protocol also features broad substrate scope, excellent functional group compatibility, and mild reaction conditions without transition metals. Moreover, the gram-scale synthesis of olefins and the generation of pharmaceutical intermediates highlighted its practical applicability. Lastly, mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction was initiated via noncovalent interactions between acetone and N-tosylhydrazone anion, which is also supported by density functional theory calculations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Postoperative pneumonia (POP) is the leading cause of death among patients with hip fractures. Simple and cost-effective markers can be used to assess the risk of these patients. This study aims to investigate the association between POP and preoperative albumin-globulin ratio (AGR) in patients with hip fractures. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 1417 hip fracture patients admitted to the Department of Orthopaedics at the hospital. Generalized additive and logistic regression models were used to determine both linear and non-linear associations between preoperative AGR and POP. A two-piece regression model was employed to determine the threshold effect. RESULTS: The study included 1417 participants, with a mean age of 77.57 (8.53) years and 26.96% (382/1417) male patients. The prevalence of POP was 6.21%. Following full covariate adjustment, each unit increase in AGR was associated with a 79% reduction in the incidence of POP (OR, 0.23; 95% CI: 0.08-0.63; P = 0.0046). The inflection point was found to be 1.33 using a two-piecewise regression model. For each unit increase in AGR on the left side of the inflection point, the incidence of POP decreased by 93% (OR, 0.07; 95%CI: 0.02-0.34; P = 0.0010). However, there was no statistically significant correlation on the right side of the inflection point (OR, 0.84; 95% CI: 0.17-4.10; P = 0.8287). CONCLUSION: There exists a non-linear association between preoperative AGR and the incidence of POP in elderly hip fracture patients. When AGR is less than 1.33, the incidence of POP is negatively correlated with AGR. However, there is no correlation when AGR is greater than 1.33.
